2Q uote for the Month“Don’t wait for opportunity. Create it.” – George Bernard ShawOutlookWest Coast sources reported a slowdown in sales recently.A Washington lumber spokesperson reported inconsistent sales, typical for early in the year, though weaker than months prior. He supplies manufacturers and distributors, nong customers aren’t at full capacity due to low order volume. Despite uncertainty, he remains cauous about predicng the year’s outcome as the market uctuates.A Southern California lumberman reported slower sales following wildres that le the region reeling, yet orders connue, fueling his opmism for the year ahead. 3Northern California, another source observed soer sales compared to months ago, aribung it to seasonal dips. He expects rebuilding from the southern res to ghten lumber supplies eventually. Both supply manufacturers and distributors, nong customers’ hope for a solid year as the market hints at an upcoming sales boost.M anager's Moments Dave SweitzerSecretary/Manager, WHATurning Taris into Opportunies for the Hardwood IndustryThe hardwood industry has long been at the mercy of shiing tari policies, facing challenges in both domesc and internaonal markets. While taris can be a disrupve force, hardwood associaons have an opportunity to leverage them to their advantage by strengthening domesc markets, advocang for policy adjustments, and promong value-added products. One of the most immediate eects of taris is the increased cost of hardwood exports, making U.S. products less compeve on the global stage. Conversely, higher taris on imported hardwoods can create a more favorable domesc market by reducing foreign compeon. Industry associaons can capitalize on this by encouraging local businesses to source hardwood domescally, promong the sustainability and quality of American hardwood products.Associaons also play a crucial role in lobbying for balanced trade policies. Rather than simply opposing taris, they can advocate for targeted measures that protect domesc producers while maintaining access to essenal internaonal markets. Engaging with policymakers to negoate tari exempons or reducons on specic products can alleviate nancial burdens on industry stakeholders.Furthermore, taris can incenvize innovaon and value-added processing within the industry. Instead of exporng raw lumber, U.S. manufacturers can focus on producing nished goods, such as high-end ooring and furniture, that command higher prices and are less aected by raw material taris. Associaons can support this shi by providing research, training, and funding opportunies for businesses looking to modernize their operaons.By proacvely addressing tari-related challenges and embracing strategic advantages, hardwood associaons can help their members not only survive but thrive in Patrick Lumber CompanyOver 100 Years in Business---- Est 1915 ----Products:Doug FirWestern Red Cedar Southern Yellow Pine Western Hemlock Alaskan Yellow Cedar West Coast Softwoods West Coast HardwoodsServices:Remanufacturing Packaging & Transport Consultation Procurement33415 Noon Rd. 6a uctuang trade environment. Through advocacy, educaon, and market development, the industry can turn taris into opportunies for long-term growth.Update from Hardwood FederaonDana Cole, Execuve DirectorApril 2025Federaon Meets with White House Economic Council, Advocates Trade Flexibility - Hardwood Federaon team members Dana Lee Cole and Pat Rita met with ocials from the White House on Thursday to discuss the potenal impacts of blanket taris on the U.S. hardwood industry and how the Administraon can support our exporters should taris have the same impact as they did in 2018. The Federaon’s trade relief proposal was shared and discussed. Our contacts at the White House suggested addional ocials to connect with and oered to facilitate meengs. We will connue to reach out to other members of the Administraon and connue our eorts with Congressional leaders in the coming weeks.Coalion Urges Administraon to Back O of Chinese Shipping Surcharges - In a move that expands the country’s trade dispute with China, the United States Trade Representave (USTR) recently issued proposed remedies in response to an invesgaon against China for trading pracces that seek to achieve marime dominance while manipulang markets. Although the invesgaon opened during the Biden administraon, the current administraon has issued the proposed remedies, which include “signicant port service fees” against Chinese-built ships. According to a study by the shipping industry, USTR’s proposed fees will increase container shipping costs by at least 25%, adding approximately $30 billion in annual costs on U.S. businesses and farmers. The Hardwood Federaon, in conjuncon with its allies in the ocean shipping coalion, is sending a leer to USTR urging the Administraon to reconsider its proposed remedies in a manner that will contain China’s market manipulaon while migang addional nancial burdens on U.S. exports.Tari Tensions Escalate in the E.U. and Canada, Others Simmer - The ongoing evoluon of the Trump Administraon’s trade policy connued this week as taris on Steel and Aluminum imported into the U.S. went into eect on a global scale. As reported by our colleagues with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), on March 12, the E.U. announced it would target American-made goods, including wood products, to retaliate against U.S. taris starng on April 1 with more later in the month. In response to this acon, the President threatened addional taris of up to 200% on European wines and liquors. To view the noce from AHEC, please click here. Talking

8Points developed by AHEC to facilitate industry response may be accessed here. Canada also added taris to another $20.6 billion in exports to the U.S. Canada’s list of retaliatory taris includes wood products. Canada also iniated a complaint with the World Trade Organizaon regarding U.S. taris on steel and aluminum. While China has announced taris on a limited number of products including logs, lumber does not seem to be a current target. Mexico has not taken retaliatory acon but has stated they are considering what acons to take and when.Do These Issues Impact Your Business? Register Now for Fly-Taxes. Trade. Tari. Regulaons. 12Earlier this month, President Donald Trump signed a pair of execuve orders to increase logging in naonal forests and on other federal lands.Trump’s orders direct federal agencies to set aggressive targets for mber harvests and to circumvent environmental laws such as the Endangered Species Act that protect crical habitats.State ocials and forestry experts say Trump’s plan relies heavily on state land management agencies to carry it out. Most states say they’ll cooperate to some extent — especially to boost wildre prevenon projects. But most states also are concerned that federal workforce cuts will undermine their goals, and some worry about loosening environmental standards.“It’s 100% dependent on state partnerships,” said Dallin Brooks, execuve director of the Naonal Hardwood Lumber Associaon trade group. “It really is conngent on the states going in and helping. The states have the experse, the manpower, the local desire, and they’re less likely to face bales on the environmentalist front.” - Brown, A. (2025, March 21). Trump wants to log more trees. he’ll need states’ help. • stateline. Stateline. hps://stateline.org/2025/03/20/trump-wants-to-log-more-trees-hell-need-states-help/Manufacturers start hiring again in February: Manufacturing employment rose by 10,000, but the January gain of 3,000 was revised downward to a loss of 5,000 jobs. Meanwhile, nonfarm payroll employment increased by 151,000 in February, slightly below the expectaon of 170,000.What it means: Although there were employment gains across many manufacturing sectors in February, the most signicant gain occurred in motor vehicles and parts, adding 8,900 jobs over the month, which was only a paral recovery of the 10,400 jobs the sector lost in January. Meanwhile, computer and electronic product manufacturing connued to shed jobs, with 2,700 jobs lost over the month. - excerpted from excerpted from “NAM-Weekly Economic Report - March 10, 2024”| NAM. Naonal Associaon of Manufacturers.: n. pag.The Council of Western State Foresters (CWSF) welcomes the new USDA Forest Service leadership and rearms its commitment to working alongside partners to accomplish shared land management goals. Addionally, CWSF and its members support the key forestry priories announced by the Naonal Associaon of State Foresters (NASF).Reecng on the recent leadership change at the USDA Forest Service, CWSF extends its appreciaon to former Chief Randy Moore and looks forward to collaborang with Chief Tom Schultz to achieve successful outcomes on state, private, and federal lands.“Western State Foresters are pleased to welcome Chief Schultz, and we look forward to his innovave ideas to support private landowners and enhance acve management on federal lands,” said John Erixson, State Forester for the Nebraska Forest Service and CWSF Execuve Commiee Chair. “His understanding of the diverse challenges and opportunies in the West will be a valuable asset.” - Western State Foresters Welcome chief Schultz. Doug Burgum (Secretary of the Interior): Well, the quick answer is yes, we’re going to do that. And of course, forests are in two places. The Bureau of Land Management, we’ve got forests all over the West. So does the U.S. Forest Service, which is under the Department of Agriculture. If you are reading this, you have the ability to get the word out to others to be an inuence for posive change for millions of fellow Americans. Over 46 years ago, I was geng my degree in Natural Resources Mgt at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Even “way back” then the following was common knowledge (in the science world) about catastrophic res: They sterilize the soil and bake it, like an adobe brick; They destroy land and water ecosystems and their biodiversity; They ll the air and water with pollutants harmful to millions of people; They can be avoided with proper, science-backed and historically proven methods of forest conservaon. They were the result of faulty, philosophical ideas (rather than science) that pushed a hands-o mentality upon governing agencies. READ MOREAn execuve order was issued to increase the harvest of mber on federal lands, cing the importance of mber to the U.S. economy and the need for forest management to reduce the risk of forest res. The Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture will publish updated guidance on increasing mber producon, improving forest management, and reducing the me to deliver mber by April 1. - Author DHA. The gain was concentrated

Page 15

15primarily in durable goods, up 26,000, while nondurable goods job openings rose by a smaller 4,000. In the larger economy, the number of job openings rose to 7.7 million, an increase of 232,000 from the previous month but a decrease of 728,000 from the previous year. Why it maers: As predicted, the boost in manufacturing acvity in January has started to stem the job opening decline. Although manufacturing job openings rose in January, they’re sll down from the average number of openings that has been the norm for the beer part of 2024. - excerpted from excerpted from “NAM-Weekly Economic Report - March 17, 2024”| NAM. Naonal Associaon of Manufacturers.: n. pag.Manufacturing output rises, driven by autos and parts: In February, manufacturing output jumped 0.9%, boosted by an 8.5% upsurge in the motor vehicles and parts index. Meanwhile, manufacturing output was up just 0.7% from February 2024. Excluding autos, manufacturing output rose 0.4% in February, with gains seen across a majority of industry groups. Why it maers: Despite the dramac increase in February, motor vehicles and parts output was sll down 4.8% over the year and hasn’t recovered fully from the drops in output in Q3 and Q4. Furthermore, annual producon growth across manufacturing sectors was mixed, with about half exhibing improvements while the other half’s producon declined. - excerpted from excerpted from “NAM-Weekly Economic Report - March 24, 2024”| NAM. Naonal Associaon of Manufacturers.: n. pag.Consumers’ spending plans are mixed amid a decline in condence: Consumer condence fell for the fourth consecuve month and slipped below the expected range that has prevailed since 2022. Meanwhile, the Expectaons Index dropped to the lowest level in 12 years and below the recession signal threshold of 80. Buying plans for homes and cars declined, while intenons to purchase other big-cket items improved, perhaps due to potenal higher prices from taris.Why it maers: Consumers’ concern about the impact of taris appears to be prompng increased purchasing plans of big-cket items. Therefore, any boost in manufacturing acvity to fulll those purchasing plans could be short-lived. - excerpted from excerpted from “NAM-Weekly Economic Report - March 31, 2024”| NAM. Naonal Associaon of Manufacturers.: n. pag.MovateTwo Places at the Same Time by Larry Dennis Enthusiams breeds consent.Heidi, an Electrical Division Project Manager for JH Kelly, a Vancouver based construcon rm providing services to commercial facilies told Session 9 of the Leadership Development Lab™(LDL):“The week right before the Thanksgiving holiday break, I had three pre-bid walk- throughs to aend and two days to do it in. There was really no way I could aend all three of them myself. Not even I can be in two places at the same me. I needed to enlist a team member, Aric, to help out by aending one of these walk throughs in my place. Of course, he already has plenty to do, just like we all do. How could I win Aric’s cooperaon, get him to volunteer his help?“I applied one of the LDL’s most important principles “5x More Enthusiasm” as I told him about the project. I described the project with lots of detail, sparkle, and excitement. I showed him how much the project would mean to our company if we won it, and the valuable impact the compleon of the project will have for the customers our client serves. Aer telling him about the project and that we have a good chance of winning the award, Aric volunteered to do the job for me!“When Aric came back, from walking the job he said, ‘This project is a perfect t for our guys. We have all the experience, talent, equipment, and supplier relaonships

16we need to perform this job with precision.’ We sll aren’t sure if we’ll win the contract, but we can be sure we represented our company to the general contractor professionally.“The lesson I learned from this experience is when I approach a situaon where I need others to pitch in, lend a hand, help me out in a pinch, the best way to gain their enthusiasc cooperaon is to apply 5X More Enthusiasm. When I do, team members are eager to help.“The acon I want you to take is to apply 5X More Enthusiasm when you are trying to persuade, win the cooperaon of others. Your enthusiasm will be contagious! You may be surprised to see how things seem to just start falling in place for you.“The benet you will gain is the creaon of a posive team, a posive team that has the joy of working together to win the bid.”Many years ago, I walked into a lawyer’s oce in Detroit, MI, saw a sign above the door that said three simple, profound, memorable words . . .
